Vista4Experts Controversy
I wasn't expecting that many visitors for my latest program and I surely wasn't expecting this much controversy about it.
I didn't spam around this tool, I just posted it on one reversing forum. Nevertheless, it has been posted on many pages over the internet. I'm glad to see that many people liked this little utility. However, there has been a lot of criticism too.
On one page I even lost a little bit my temper. I read a lot of comments like "if you're going to deactivate all the security features in Vista you can keep XP as well", "I do all this tweaking from a script" (which, of course, is not even possible) or "this program clearly isn't for experts". After my light outburst, one guy (x0r), probably in the reversing community, wrote:
"Before you idiots start trying to berate the use of this program again I'd suggest you take this into account, this is perfect for 'experts' who have just migrated for Vista, in fact I would have used this if I didn't already have these tweaks set up beforehand. Furthermore, you should know the author (Daniel Pistelli) is a bright mind when it comes to general Windows related information and I'm an avid reader of his articles and I constantly use his programs such as CFF Explorer.
The fact that you're criticizing the program for bundling these tricks and making an easy and safe route to this is stupid if nothing else. I highly suggest you consider people in the RCE community before you dismiss this as pointless and frivolous.
Again, let me emphasize this; this is perfect for EXPERTS that have not yet applied such patches and/or have recently migrated to Vista, this allows a safe and fast way to seamlessly applying patches."
Well, I'm very grateful for appreciating so much my work. This kind of feedback always totally repays me of what I do. I don't want to insult those who criticized in certain ways my work, but I really didn't expect the controversy about the fact that it reduces the security. Of course, many fixes tend to lower the security. It's clearly written on the page. I wouldn't recommend to lower the security if you don't know what you are doing, that's why it's called Vista4Experts. Many people even said that experts don't do use these kind of programs / don't lower security / whatever. Well, first there is no such thing as "these kind of programs", since, even if it's a small program, Vista4Experts is the first of its kind, it really was developed for experts. And why shouldn't experts lower the security under certain conditions? I personally use the UAC only to test my programs, all other times it just bothers me. Why should the automatic updates run down my system when I'm not at my computer? I might be downloading something. Not to talk about the security center notifications which are most annoying for an expert: I know when the UAC / firewall / defender is disabled.
One guy even was surprised by the fact that Vista4Experts could be executed on Windows XP, like it was some kind of bug. Truth is, I didn't put a check in the code simply because some fixes are valid on XP as well and a true expert knows which fixes can be applied to Vista only and those who can be applied on other Windows editions as well.
It's just that a lot of people try and criticize something from the wrong point of view. Maybe the fact that I used the word "experts" did trigger reactions from people who wanted to demonstrate that this isn't something for experts and that it's just a catch phrase. It wasn't my intention to be pretentious with the name I gave to this utility, I just tried to be descriptive of what the program is and the users who should be using it.
But that's just about the criticism. Fact is, I see a lot of people who like this little piece of code and find it useful. That repays me not only of the work, but also of the initial controversy.
Thank you!

I like it!
I was getting tired of Vista telling me my BitDefender protection was not working, when it was.
Great Job, thanks.
Me too ^_^
Nice day.
hi!
Is it possible apply changes with Vista4Expert silently?
Bye
Hi, I could implement this feature and it would be useful. What kept me from doing it is that these are important things which shouldn't be changed without the user noticing it. Otherwise it could be used by maliciois programs.
Ciao
